Edinburgh is a city full of history, charm, and romance – making it the ideal location for couples who want to skip the big wedding and opt for a more intimate celebration. From the iconic skyline crowned by Edinburgh Castle to the charming cobbled streets of the Old Town, it’s a photographer’s dream backdrop. For couples looking for an stress-free, beautiful day, eloping in Edinburgh’s city centre is the perfect option.

The Edinburgh City Chambers is the ultimate venue for couples who want a meaningful but low-key ceremony in the heart of the city. With its elegant architecture and historic significance, it’s the perfect starting point for your elopement adventure. One of the biggest perks of choosing City Chambers is its location – you step right out into the iconic Royal Mile, surrounded by the energy of the city while still being able to sneak away into quiet, secluded spots for intimate photos. The atmosphere is perfect for couples who want a relaxed vibe but still want their day to feel special.

I had the pleasure of photographing Janine and Nick’s elopement recently, and it was a perfect example of how intimate and fun an Edinburgh elopement can be. We started the day by meeting after their ceremony, and they immediately brought out heart-shaped glasses for a fun twist to their newlywed look! After a celebratory confetti throw on the Royal Mile, we wandered through the city, taking advantage of the quieter, hidden spots for those relaxed and candid moments. Janine initially told me she was camera-shy, but it didn’t take long before she and Nick were fully in the moment, laughing, and being totally themselves. We found pockets of the city where they could just enjoy being together – whether that was wandering down cobbled lanes or stopping for a sweet, quiet moment together. By the end of the session, Janine was totally at ease, having gone from being nervous to fully enjoying every second of their time in front of the camera.

When you book me for your Edinburgh elopement, you’re getting more than just a photographer – I’m there to capture your real, authentic moments. I make sure the experience is fun and stress-free, allowing you to feel comfortable from start to finish. Janine later shared with me that she and Nick were initially nervous about the photos, but they soon felt as though I was just another friend on their day – capturing the joy and love without any awkward posing. They said they’ll treasure their photos forever, which for me, is exactly what elopement photography is all about. My style is all about candid, colourful, and documentary photography. I want to capture the real, unscripted moments of your day, so when you look back on your photos, you’ll remember how it felt – the laughter, the excitement, the love.

Best Times of Year: While Edinburgh is stunning all year round, elopements in the autumn and spring offer some of the best light and fewer crowds. Early mornings or late evenings also give you quieter city vibes that make for the best, most intimate photos.

Legal Considerations: Scotland makes it super easy to get legally married, whether you’re a local or planning a destination elopement. Just make sure to sort out the paperwork with the City Chambers beforehand.

Practical Tips: Be prepared for Edinburgh’s unpredictable weather – bring a funky umbrella just in case! After the ceremony, take time to wander through the city centre. Whether you’re grabbing a coffee at a local café or enjoying the views from Calton Hill, Edinburgh is full of hidden gems for those relaxed post-ceremony moments.

"I had a look back to when I first emailed you. I found you by Googling Dunfermline photographers. You were the only one I clicked on and was instantly sold. Was a gut feeling thing. You’re going places with your photography! What you have that you can’t learn is the ability to really be in the experience with your subjects which is why you’re so good at capturing the candid natural moments and the essence of the couple. That’s what I think people treasure the most. I had told you I’m shy and didn’t want anyone watching us and so not an in front of the camera person and then you made us feel so at ease and relaxed I completely forgot about all that! We’ll treasure these forever xxx"
